G.U.S. plans Barrington Mall expansion
The Farrington Street Shoeing Centre should be allowed to expand towards Everard Street, into a present residential zone, for buildings and off-street carparking, the City Council town-planning hearing committee was told yesterday. A planning report said that the application of G.U.S. Properties, Ltd, should be supported, but that there should also be development conditions to ensure a minimum nuisance for nearby residents and improved access for traffic. There should also be extensive landscaping and tree
planting, and stormwater drainage should be all internal. Such drainage should be sent direct to the Wilderness Drain, between Barrington Mall and Barrington Park. According to the G.U.S. proposal, car-parking at ground level would be provided on the opposite side of Everard Street, partly to make up for taking space in expansion of the supermarket and creation of a new mall area. One access to the car-park is proposed from Simeon Street.
The planning report said that land previously zoned commercial in the shopping centre was not necessarily
considered adequate to cope with future expansion. A strong growth potential had always been seen for the centre.
In the forthcoming district review, both the Barrington Street and Sydenham shopping centres might be given a special commercial classification to allow for proper development of each area.
But there should also be a limit to growth, so that the centre did not threaten the Hoon Hay shopping district, which now has the same commercial zoning. The bearing committee reserved a decision.
