Dickel to coach Checkers men
Mr Carl Dickel has been selected as coach of the Checkers A grade men’s basketball team for the coming season.
He replaces the tall American, Bill Kinchen, who had to return to the United States in December when his mother became ill.' He advised the club by letter last week that he would be unable to return. This is a considerable blow to Checkers, who won the Canterbury men’s championship last season. Kinchen, who arrived towards the end of last winter, was to have coached both the men’s and women’s senior teams this year. His fare to New Zealand was paid by the club.
“I am disappointed,” the president (Mr Kevin Baker) said yesterday. “But what upset me most was that he did nof tell us what he was doing for two and a half months." However, the club is fortunate to have obtained the services of Mr Dickel, a former Canterbury and Otago representative, one of the finest coaches in th* country.
The Checkers A grade women’s team will be coached by Russell McCormack, back in Christchurch after two seasons playing and coaching in Australia. He is expected to be available for the Checkers men’s team as a player.
