Boaters across Tasman
NZPA Sydney A New Zealand farmer, Brian Pearce, a self-con-fessed non-swimmer, arrived at Sydney on Monday after completing a 2500 km Tasman crossing in an 8m motor cruiser.
Mr Pearce and his wife, Louise, left Christchurch on Christmas Eve and travelled up the New Zealand east coast, leaving the port of Houhora on the North Island’s east coast several weeks later.
The $30,000 fibreglass cruiser was fitted with a four-man liferaft, extra fuel tanks, fibreglass window covers, two radios, and twin Volvo-Penta 140 h.p. sterndrive engines.
“The weather was pretty good most of the way,” Mr Pearce said, at the Cruising
Yacht Club’s Rushcutters Bay marina. “The only bad spot was when we got to Lord Howe Island,” he said. “The wind was bad and the rain was pouring down. You could not see a hand in front of your face.” The couple made refuelling stops at both Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island en route to Sydney.
