Union view on train service

Sir, —I am glad you advocate in your leader “Union view on train service” that “the union view on the department’s decision should be heard.” But 1 do not agree that the Sunday Wellington suburban service should be discontinued because it loses money at present. The destruction of

the Wahine and subsequent limping WellingtonLyttelton service certainly contributed to the Rangatira’s withdrawal, at great cost to the future of the South Island. Regularity seems to be the essence of public transport. The railwaymen who know their industry are doing a public service in drawing attention to the self-destructive policies of “economy at all costs” at the expense of regular service. In an age of energy shortage we must preserve the railway system. — Yours, etc., W. ROSENBERG. February 21, 1978.
