An appreciation of the Forest Service
Sir, —I am tired of reading derogatory letters about the Forest Service written by Nelson people and others. 1 have just had the pleasure of walking the Wangapeka Track, spending nights in forestry huts, crossing forestry bridges and being able to 'complete a satisfying tramp. It is a trip that takes one through country where Nature is continuously destroying by floods, slips and earthquakes, but also continuously renewing her forests. I would like to know if these people who protest so vigorously have ever walked and participated with Nature as one has to with the Wangapeka. Or do they drive round in buses, sit up in trees and read information fed to them, thereby stirring up trouble between two hard-working departments. I am very grateful to the Forest Service and admire and respect its work. “You cannot please all the people all the time.” The N.Z.F.S. should take heart. It is doing a fine job. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) EUNICE TILLER. February 17, 1978.
