Acting bursaries awarded
South Pacific Television has awarded drama student bursaries to the Theatre Corporate in Auckland. Announcing the award the director-general, (Mr Allan Martin), said the aim of the bursaries was to promote higher standards of acting. He said that over a twoyear period six selected students would be able to undergo training in a wide variety of dramatic techniques at the Theatre Corporate. Subjects covered would include speech, acting techniques, movement, dance and ballet. Mr Martin said that the theatre, and eventually television would benefit as a result of the training received by the actors. This view was endorsed by TV2’s head of drama (Mr John Mcßae), who welcomed the move. The director of Theatre Corporate (Mr Raymond Hawthorne) said the bursaries offered the students opportunities to study in the environment of a fully committed community theatre. The students would be able to observe professional directors, actors and technicians working at their craft, he Said. The award winners for 1978 will be announced later in the year.
