Bowls title taken
PA New Plymouth Barbara Kunicich (Bayswater) won two finals against Thelma Snell (Whangarei) to take the singles title at the national women’s bowling tournament in New Plymouth yesterday. One-lifer Mrs Kunicich overcame blustery conditions to take both lives from the previously unbeaten Mrs Snell, winning the first game, 19-17, and walking away with the second, 26-8. In the replay Mrs Snell scored a single from the first end to lead for the only time in the game. Mrs Kunicich could do little wrong for the rest of the game. She scored nine from the next six ends with ones and twos to lead, 9-1, after seven ends.
Mrs Snell gained another one
on the eighth end. Mrs Kunicich, who Improved stesdily as the game progressed, scored a maximum four, followed by twos on the next two ends, to lead, 18-2. after 12 ends. Mrs Snell scored a one on the thirteenth end and a three on the fourteenth to peg the score back to 18-6. Any hope of a comeback was dashed when Mrs Kunicich scored another four to lead, 22-6, after 15 ends Another two on the sixteenth end sealed the game, with Mrs Snell unable to catch up They continued playing. Mrs Kunicich gaining one on the seventeenth end and Mrs Snell a two on the eighteenth to make the score 25-8 The game stopped at the twentieth end, with Mrs 1 Kunicich leading. 26-8.
