DOWN TO EARTH
Most brides have a posh wedding to please their mothers, who have waited for years for such a special occasion so they can really go to town and buy themselves a complete new outfit —sh oes, bags, hat, dress, coat, and all — without having to explain why to their harassed husbands, already so dizzily in debt, as to be beyond caring what effect the extra paltry hundreds involved will have on their respective bank managers. And so it was an extremely posh do when the daughter of a well-known Canterbury family was married at Ashburton not so long back.
The breakfast was held in an immense marquee
set up on their spacious lawn. All through the hot w lather this rjch green lawn had been fastidiously watered and groomed and watered so much so that the gardener had every reason to be truly proud of his lawn. It looked a perfect picture. And so it came to pass that the guests were all merrily seated on Terms in the marquee when the distinguished bridal party arrived. The bride looked devastatingly beautiful, ■he bridegroom bewildered and the bridesmaids at the groomsmen. They were a grand and impressive little party as they stood in all their glory at the table while cameras clicked to record this auspicious moment for history.
Then after regally arranging her flowing gown, the bride sat, the other members of the party thankfully following. lowering themselves into the special chairs provided for the official party. But the guests were no less amazed than the bridal party as the legs of their chairs sank into the water-logged lawn. Down, down they went till only f he dumbfounded faces of the bride and her entourage were visible above the ornately laid out table.
After much commotion some long planks, were brought in to make a safe and solid flooring for the bridal party’s muddylegged chairs.
