Glen men missed

Saloon car racing at the Black and White Speedway this week-1 end suffered through the absence of several ’’big-name” drivers. j Three of them are in Wanga-; nui tor tne National Saloon tar Championships. Royce Clive, Doug Smith, and Tony Cardwellj have all gone north for e events. Clive and Smith had problems; getting their cars across Cook| Strait because of the Wellington railwaymens dispute. Eventually, however, they managed to have them air lifted to the North Is-1 land. Meanwhile, at the Woodford; Glen Black and White Speedway.! the A Grade and B Grade were combined to compensate for the Jumbo Berryman dominated competition, winning three of. the evening’s four saloon events' an I failing to win the touitiu only because of a tlat tyre. Da'e Sangstcr presented the greatest tnreat to Berrryman’s superiority but made it count in only one race. The evening's first race began; with a very confused jostling for' position, until Berryman’s Falcon! Coupe gained the lead in the fourth Jap” He had driven very hard to reach that position after starting at the rear of the tield. and yet, within another circuit, was lapping the tail-enders. Rod Shuter had also managed; to §ght his way through from the rear, although he could not claw his way into second place until the last lap. In the second event, Berryman took, the lead even earlier. Dave Sangster’s Holden played vir-j tually the same role as that of Rod Shuter had in the previous race, and finished a confident second. Berryman missed gaining at least a major placing in the third event when he got the flat tyre.’i

: Sangster had been forcing his! .jway through the pack with con-[ :siderable style however, and had; no difficulty in beating Allan] iDingwell’s Cortina home. The evening’s final saloon’ event was very unlucky for Gor- , don Foster, who eventually: ;finished third. He had a very;, good lead until the orange flag!: dropped after another car got’ into trouble. I When racing resumed, Ber •[. ryman and Sangster had closed]• right up. and rapidly sliced their; way through the rest of the!: ipack to pass Foster. Results were: |‘ Saloons STL race: J.
