Uncle Remus track star
Special correspondent Auckland. The extraordinary abilitv of Uncle Remus was shown again at Takanim yesterday when the big fellow shrugged off the last 600 m of work in hardly believable time. After others had been urged to cover 600 m in anywhere near 38sec. Uncle Remus returned 36.8 sec and that was the second half of a 1200 m in Imin 16.2 sec. Ridden a s usual by Bobby Vance, Uncle Remus began, in fact, from the 1600 m but coasted around the first turn. It was not until past the 1200 m that he began to pick up speed and he then poured it on to cover the last 1000 m in Imin I.4sec. With the markers out eight moires and the ground too dry and dusty to provide earily good going. Uncle Remus’s tirhe) for the last 1000 m was exceptional, more so as he still had plenty in reserve. March Legend and Good Lord, others which will help draw a crowd to Te Rapa on Tuesday, used the plough which provided much faster footing. Ridden by David Medcalfe, March Legend did 800 m in 49.6 sec. the last 600 m in 37 2sec. and Good Lord (Miss Jenkins) rounded off easy work with 600 m in 4?-ec. March Legend is unlikely to go at speed again in his training before Te Rapa, where the Lion ’irown Sprint is his big assignment Good Lord also in the big 1400 m event, will however gallop again, probably on Sundav.
