Two ahead in table tennis

Avonside II and Riccarton continued to out-distance the field in the eleventh round of the senior inter-club table tennis competition. With three rounds remaining, Avonside II has a two-point advantage over Riccarton 1, with the third team, Avonside 1,, seven points behind Riccarton I. Avonside 111 managed to wrest three matches off Avonside II and two victories were scored by Jan Morris, the country’s top-ranked woman, who inflicted a rare defeat on John Richards and comfortably accounted for Mark Clasper. The wily Bert Thompson had to battle hard against Miss Morris and Brian Wilson, but the determined defender finished on top at the end. Riccarton I also dropped three matches against Dallington and several other matches could have gone the other way. As expected, Yee Chow Boi and Stuart Armstrong had three wins for the second team, but Yee conceded games to George Hart and Peter Whittaker, and Armstrong was severely tested in three by Whittaker.

Graeme Condliffe and Whit-, taker both beat Michael Hamel, who was out of touch, and they teamed well to win their doubles contest. Riccarton II beat Linwood, 9-3. Two of the province’s best players, Wayne Adamson and Ling Nan Ming, had an absorbing contest, the result favouring Adamson in the third. He served tightly and played many brilliant recovery shots. Graham Lamb and Stephen Adamson gave good support for Riccarton. With Harry Redmond sadly out of form, it needed a dedicated effort from Martin Kelly and Steven Dixon to take Avonside I to a narrow victory (15 games to" 14) against Riccarton 111. Colin Tipper fared best of the losing side, winning his matches against Redmond and Dixon. Points: Avonside II 22. Riccarton I 20. Avonside I 13. Avonside 111 10, Linwood 8.
