Hospital for Tonga

PA Wellington New Zealand will build a new 28-bed hospital <n Tonga for the Ha’apai group of islands.

Solar energy will help power it, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project, including staff housing, is expected to cost up to 5615.000.

Foundation work will begin this month. The bulk of the building materials will be shipped direct to Ha’apai from Auckland, about the end of March.

In 1974, the Tonga Government asked New Zealand for [help in designing, building, and equipping a hospital on Ha’apai that would replace a structure built in 1907 and no longer able to meet the needs of the group’s 15,000 people.

The new hospital will go up on an adjacent site and should be ready for use in 15 months.
