Aust, yacht wins

PA Auckland. Th# fourth race of the world Cherub class yachting championship yesterday developed into a race of the champions when the respective Australian and New Zealand title-holders, Andrew Pearson and Mark Paterson, fought out the lead. Pearson took the race but his winning margin after approximately 10 miles of racing was a mere haif boat length. Paterson had chased his Australian rival in the Air New Zealand sponsored contest for the entire race, catching and passing him on the final windward beat, only to see him slip through his cover to take the gun bv the narrowest of margins. On the final windward beat to the finish Paterson pulled out all: the stops and managed to tack! ahead of his trans-Tasman rival! but right on the line Pearson; found the desired air to sail’

through the New Zealand leader and to take the race by a mere five seconds. After dropping his worst performance Paterson now leads on points for the series but cannot afford any mistakes as he has a disqualification in the second race to carry. Results:—
