Former radio star dead
Mrs Molly McNab, a popular broadcaster at 3ZB from [the late 1940 s until 1963, died lin Christchurch on Monday. Her warm, friendly voice drew a tremendous response from her “Women’s Hour” .listeners and she came to be i regarded by thousands of Canterbury women as a kind of favourite neighbour who dropped in for a chat every afternoon. I She once described herself as a “one-woman inquiry i bureau” because of the countless requests for information [she received. To give colour and life to her sessions she made such efforts as going out in a whale chaser in Tory Channel and doing a circuit round the Wigram track with a racing driver. Mrs McNab, whose Christian names were Hinemoa Ursula Ida. travelled extensively in Europe. Australia, and Papua New Guinea and gave travel talks “on the air’ j when she returned. Mrs McNab left broadcast-’ ing at 3ZB in 1963 to join thej station’s copy department. | and retired some years later.} She never refused a request for help from a voluntary organisation. She was a longstanding member of the [Soroptimist Internationa! of , Christchurch and twice held office as president. She was the initiator of the. service club’s “Bride of the! Year” contest, which has} , raised considerable funds fori 'community projects, She was! i
lalso responsible for the planting of bluebells in Little Hagley Park. , Mrs McNab was a New [Zealand delegate to the 1952 conference of the International Federation of Soroptimist Clubs, held in Copenhagen. She was the Soroptimist Club’s delegate to the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, and an executive member of the Canterbury Travel Club for many years. Mrs McNab is survived bvi her sister. Mrs Dorothy Ber'row, of Christchurch.
