The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) will be outfitted today for a five-day trip to Antarctica later this week. Mr Hay will be a special guest of the American Science Foundation; and his "home base” for the stay will be United States facilities at McMurdo Sound.
His visit — including a stopover at the South Pole — results from a personal invitation by Dr Norman Hackerman. chairman of the National Science Board. Mr Hay said it was in appreciation of this city’s long association with United States Navy
Antarctic support force activities. As far as he knows, he will be the first Mayor of Christchurch to visit Antarctica while in office. Commander Robert Mo«<;. head of Detachment Delta, the United States Navy unit at Christchurch Airport, will accompany Mr Hay to the Antarctic. At McMurdo Sound, his host will be Captain Claude Nordhill, commander of the naval support force in Antarctica. Depending on weather conditions, Mr Hay will leave either late tomorrow or early on Friday.
