VIEWERS’ VIEWS

“The Governor ’ Sir, I have read many letters praising the TV film “The Governor,” and of course those against the whole enterprise. I wish to applaud the excellent interpretation, by talented artists, of a man at the crossroads of New Zealand’s history. Governor Grey, by his nature, was blessed or possessed, depending on your point of view, with normal human failings, but was able through all tribulations to maintain his vision of a free country — our New Zealand. Through his courage this country was made a model of enlightenment for many countries historically centuries its senior. My childhood was spent in the Bay of Islands; indeed I was educated at the Bay of Islands College. I know the settings of scenes depicted bn film. I have seen the sites; I lived among them, and was taught the history, Hone Heke, the scandals and all. I believe the “The Governor” was a true and honest interpretation of what were the most formative years of New Zealand, indeed its birth. Let us think — it matters little how much is spent in the telling of a truth, especially when that truth is our heritage.— K. R. MOORE.
