Nelson pottery sells well

Nelson reporter About 500 of the 1000 pieces of pottery exhibited by Nelson district potters were sold on the first two days of the pottery and weaving exhibition at Nelson’s Suter Gallery. Pottery casserole dishes (far left) are shown in the exhibition. Christopher Vine’s work (in photograph on right) form part of the 1000 pieces on display until January 22. The casserole dishes in the foreground are the work of Paul Laird, with other dishes by Jack Laird in the background. Big crowds have attended the exhibition since it opened on Saturday, and the choicest and cheapest pieces were quickly snapped up. At times, buyers were three and four deep round the sales table. Nelson has become renowned as the pottery centre of New Zealand, not so much for the “arty” pieces made but for the general, domestic pottery produced. This is of an extremely high standard, and relatively cheap.
