Dawnway fancied for Invercargill

Special correspondent Invercargill On the strength of a good second behind Like Magic in a sharplv run sprint at Wyndham on Monday. Dawnwav looks well in line to win the $7OOO N.Z. Aluminium Smelter Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Southland Racing Club’s New- Year meeting today. Dawnway. which is trained by Gerald Robertson, one of her part-owners, who produced Moncur to win the Wyndham Cup, has been one of the most reliable race mares in the south at 1600 m. She will be better suited than she was against the sprinters. Most opposition for Dawnway may come from Top Secret, which has compiled an excellent record. She was second to Greek Magic in the Timaru Cup last week, after being promoted from third, and on that run she will take some beating. Leonous, more capable than she has been given credit for, has won two of her last four starts. She is rated highly. Soldier Girl, runner-up to First Tuesday in the Waikouaiti Cup on Monday, also comes into calculations. Great Day looks the one to beat in the second leg, the 1600 m Passport Whiskv Handicap, a distance which will suit him. It is not a strong field and Ohcee, which has finished second at each of his last three starts, Aacheron and Red Student will also have strong backing.
