Objection to links with Chile
Plans to appoint a New Zealand Ambassador to Chile have been condemned by the Christchurch Chilean Solidarity Committee.
A spokesman for the committee, Mr D. J. Casey, said that it was time New Zealand realised that Chile was a fascist dictatorship similar to Hitler’s Germany.
“Thousands of New Zealanders died in the struggle against fascism in Germany during the forties and here we are initiating the closest possible ties with a fascist dictatorship in Chile,” he said. New Zealand had to decide whether trade with Chile was as important as
showing its support for freedom and democracy. It was well known that more than 30,000 people had been executed for political crimes in Chile and thousands more had been imprisoned without trial. “Democracy is dead in Chile,” said Mr Casey. He also criticised the can-
