Parliament's diary
The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) made a Ministerial statement detailing tax relief measures when the House sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Seven bills were given the Royal assent — the Finance Act, 1977, the Potato Industry Act, the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council Amendment Act, the Indecent Publications Amendment Act, the Appropriation Act, and the Appropriations (No. 2) Act.
Consent from the Gov-ernor-General for the appropriation of public money was received for the Tokelau (Territorial Sea and Exclusive Economic Zone) Bill, the Massage Parlours Bill, and the Queen Elizabeth the Second Arts Council Amendment (No. 2) Bill.
A motion put by the Prime Minister to take urgency for business on the Order Paper down to and including the committee stages of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Bill was won on a division, 44-24. Mr W. E. Cooper (Nat., Otago Central) presented a petition Of the Clutha Action Committee and the Clyde Ratepayers and Householders Association and 3956 others praying that the House review the approval of Scheme ‘F’ for the Clutha Valley hydroelectric scheme, and support an alternative low dam at Clyde. Ministers answered 21 questions. The House was still debating the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Bill at 1 a.m.
