The Christchurch Drainage Board’s construction and treatment works chairman (Mr C. H. Russell) now uses an old-fashioned wire-cage soap shaker in his home to help in the fight against detergent discharges into the sewerage system. He held it up at a board meeting last evening, and said the board should be doing a better job of edu-
eating the public to stop using detergents. The problem had been brought home to him through “The Water Cycle” film documentary shown on television last week, a film made partly in Christchurch. “This is a serious problem,” Mr Russell said. “We should set an example by using things like this, and showing the benefits generated by using soap.”
