Three affected by ammonia leak

Timaru reporter Three persons were exposed to a heavy concentration of ammonia gas from a leak at the factory of JWattie Canneries, Ltd, in Meadows Road, Washdyke, at 8.25 a.m. yesterday.

The manager (Mr B. F. Davidson) said that one person taken to Timaru Hospital for examination had been kept overnight for observation. The leak at the end of the freezing tunnel appeared to have been caused by a faulty valve. The building

was evacuated by the 170 staff. The Timaru Fire Brigade sent two applicances. Firemen and staff helped to spray the building with fog nozzles and an extractor fan was put in the 100 m by 40m building to disperse the ammonia.
