Sir. — In your very interesting I pages this month on ■ Canterbury cricket, I ■ noticed with regret that i no mention was made of : Dan Reese, Joe Bennett I and Don Sandman, all I three indispensable to ; New Zealand and Canter- j bury cricket for many’ I years. It is doubtful if I there has been a greater I all-rounder in the country j than Reese and if the total i bag of wickets taken by Bennett has . been exceeded. Bennett, against Wellington in 1910, took 12 for 40 and had the high distinction of dismissing Trumper in February’ 1914 after he had made 293. I used to stand behind the ; practice net on Hagley | Oval watching Reese’s I deliveries. A left-hander, \ he could produce that rare j ball, an in-swinger and ? break-away in one deliv- j ery. Sandman, a pioneer | “googly” bowler was also I a very dashing batsman ■ with a wonderful square- ; cut. Of course, it was not I possible to mention all the ! stars. —Yours, etc., H. S. BA VERSTOCK.
