The quiz way to a correct buy
House-buying time is question time and here are some of the checkpoints which may help in comparing the various homes shown to you by your agent. General queries: Is there good natural light and ventilation? Is the toilet separate from the bathroom? (This is wise if you have a big family). Is the plumbing sound? (Check the flow from the taps to be sure). Is there plenty of storage space? If there is • not. is there space to ' build cupboards? If the house you are ini specting has an iron roof i what condition is it in? Is there dampness? Any borer? Flaking paint inside and out? Do you note any discoloured wallpaper?
What about warped woodwork and doors? Is the house close to schools, shops, transport and your workplace? The woman inspecting may ask:
Is the kitchen just right? Are you satisfied with the cupboard space? What about the position and size of the sink bench? Is the stove of suitable quality after all, it is a fixed chattel?
Is the space for the refrigerator adequate for the fridge you already own? What is the condition of the curtains, blinds and drapes? Are the carpeting and other floor coverings in good condition? What chattels are to remain at the completion of the transaction? What standard are the laundry facilities? Are the bedrooms airy without being draughty? Will housework be easier because the areas devoted to working, relaxing and sleeping are separately and sensibly grouped? The man inspecting might ask; If your family is likely to need an increased amount of space in the future:
Is there room for expansion? Is there a workbench, shed, garage or carport and storage space beneath the house? How is the garden: Are there fruit trees or established shrubs? Are i»iere fences or retaining walls Is there plenty of good topsoil? Is the house built of long-lasting materials and is it well maintained? What is the state of the guttering, downpipes and drains? Does the house need rebiocking? If any work is necessary’ what is it all going to cost? These questions are basic; many people never ask them, and they should: make sure you do.
