Consent not needed
PA Wellington There is nothing in the law which prohibits the use of action photographs of young athletes to promote alcoholic liquor in advertisements without the consent of the athletes. The Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) said this in Parliament in reply to a question by Dr I. J. Shearer (Nat., Hamilton East). Mr Thomson said he wasi aware that such a photograph had been published in) some newspapers. He said it could be that) the advertisement was a breach of the “code of prac-) tice” drawn up by the Liquor) Industry Council in 1973. The! code said that liquor adver-l rising should not encourage! drinking by young people) under the legal age. It also said that all models!
in liquor advertisements should appear to be clearly over the age of 20. Mr Thomson suggested that Dr Shearer take the matter up with the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council, as one of its functions was to make recommendations to the Minister of Justice on liquor advertising.
