Clyde dam 'a waste’
PA Wellington The proposed 65 high dam near Clyde, on the Clutha River, will cost the country millions of dollars in waste hydro-electricity, according to the Campaign for Non-Nuclear Futures.
The organisation’s secretary (Mrs M. Melhuish) said New Zealanders used less electricity last winter than in the previous winter. The decrease in electricity demand would mean millions of dollars worth of water spilled to waste, preventing more constructive use of it.
The hydro scheme, known as Scheme F, has been approved by the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority. Mrs Melhuish said the authority, in approving the scheme, had ignored steadily increasing protests by environmental groups and the recommendations of expert "committees which had reported on the best balanced use of the Clutha River.
