Hamner pools up $l00,000
The cost of the first stage of the Hanmer Springs thermal pools has risen from $165,000 to $265,000 in one year. The Amuri County Council was $87,000 short, said the County Clerk (Mr B. J. Peters) at a meeting of the council. Members of Parliament for Marlborough (Mr E. G. Latter) and Rangiora (Mr D. F. Quigley) had been approached in an attempt to obtain more money from the Government, but Mr Quigley had reported no success, said Mr Peters. “We need to know before the Government goes into recess what they are going to do,” said Cr J. R. A. Chaffey.
The meeting then went into committee to discuss the cost
Stage I, tendered at $165,000 early this year, consists of an active pool, three passive, pools, a spout pool, plant room and the conversion of the old physiotherapy block at Queen Mary Hospital into changing rooms. Stage II will consist of a new changing block and perhaps saunas and plunge pools, in about 10 years. It was resolved in open meeting not to accept tenders for stage II until they had been considered at a special council meeting on December 16.
