Schools’ cricket

The first day of the fourth round in the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association’s premier grade was dominated by the bat. Linwood High School declared its first innings against Shirley Boys* High School at 344/6, with M. Lane barfing well for an unbeaten 130. The Shirley bowling attack was severely depleted and some poor fielding enabled the Linwood batsmen to do much as they liked. Shirley was 31/0 at the close of play.

Cashmere High School won the toss and batted against St Bede’s College on its home ground. At the end of the day, it had achieved a 32-run lead. It was dismissed for 153. of which P. Davies made 77 in an innings which contained some fine driving and lofted shots over the inner fieldsmen. J. McGuire bowled particularly well for St Bede’s, taking 7/70, ] but his efforts were not helped iby the performance of the St IHede’s batsmen. j of application and the final !wicket fell on the last ball of |the day. A. McGuire scored 39 ‘but none of the other batsmen showed a willingness to put their I heads down for any length of [time. St Andrew’s College declared ‘its first innings at 256/5 against [Burnside High School, with D.
