Jaks-United gets its revenge
Jaks-United, which was beaten for a place in the national club softball championship by Richmond earlier in the season, had its revenge yesterday when it beat Richmond to win a place in the zone final of the Qantel national knockout competition. United beat Richmond 5-0 in a semi-final at Rugby Park and went on to beat Papanui 1-0 in the final later in the afternoon. Papanui beat Western Suburbs, handsomely, 11-0 in the other semi-final. The Qantel tournament is a national club knock-out competition played in four zones. United will represent Canterbury in the southern zone finals at Oarnaru on i February 12. The winner will compete in the national! finals at Auckland two weeks later. |i
Last year was the int augural tournament and United was Canterbury’s representative on that ocassion. A women’s tournament — the Bonds Knit national knock-out competition — is conducted along the same lines and yesterday Burnside won the right to represent Canterbury in the zone finals. In a tense and closely. fought men’s final, United scored the only run mid-way through the game from a Tony Mountford hit. after the pitching of that team, it was not equipped to handle the extra pace generated by Bradbury. There were three entries in the women’s contest. In the first round Burnside beat Albion 5-2 and in the final it met Western Suburbs which drew the bye to the finalBurnside won the final easily 11-0. A feature was I the batting of Ruth Hepburn who scored three runs from three turns at bat. Besides Hepburn, Lynda Shepherd scored a home run and Ranui Hapi (2), Marilyn Lee, Anthea Feaver, Robyn Storer, Penney King and Bernadette Straker scored runs. Burnside goes on to the zone final at Timaru on February 12. The national final will be at Wellington on March 5.
