Gabites skates in
PA Timaru A Timaru roller skater, Calvin Gabites, more than matched the challenges of the visitors to win the international tour of Timaru which finished yesterday. A crucial break by Gabites in the sixth of the eight stages—the 10,000 m road race — rocketed him from seventh to a 30s lead and this could not be pegged back over the last two stages. Second in the tour was the New Zealand champion, Peter Maxwell (Masterton), while John Fry, one of the
1 two visiting Englishmen, was third. Gabites’ time for the 36km tour, which included road and banked-track events as well as a 3000 m steeplechase, was 74min 41.95, 27.5 s ahead of Maxwell. The best of the Australians in the field was Tim Smyth, who was eighth Imin behind. The B-grade tour was won by the Australian junior champion, Greg Duncombe, while Craig Skudder (Timaru) won the C grade. The first woman in the B grade was Marie Maxwell (Masterton).
