Cricket victory repeated

Burnside-West University, under that capable leadership of Peter Wallace, repeated last year’s victory in the second Sydenham six-a-side cricket tournament at Sydenham Park yesterday. The Burnside-West team was ideally balanced for the requirements of six-a-side cricket. It had skilful and aggressive batsmen and a penetrative medium-pace attack. The fielding was first class and Wallace, apart from half-centuries in the first two rounds, placed his players cleverly to restrict the scoring. In its four matches, Burn-side-West totalled almost 300 runs and kept its opposition to 193. With five of the BumsideWest six having had some senior experience, the team was favoured to beat Lan-

caster Park, which did remarkably well considering that Trevor Luke, the captain, was the only member with much seasoning at senior level. The teams for the final were: Burnside-West University: Wallace, John Davies, Jon Smith, Tony Farrant, John Preece, and Gerald Cummins. Lancaster Park: Luke, Stuart Cameron, lan Malcolm, Brian Thomason, Paul Sims, Mike Lester. Burnside-West scored freely for its five overs. Wallace and Davies took 14 off each of the first two overs and, although Davies was dismissed off the first ball of the third over, there was little slackening in the scoring. After three overs, Burn-side-West had 40 and it fin-

I ished with nine off the fourth over and 12 off the last. Davies was the only batsman dismissed. Park scored 10 runs off the first over but it lost its main scoring weapon in the second over when the hard hitting Cameron was bowled. Although behind BumsideWest’s scoring rate after three overs, Park was still in with a chance at 33 for one. The fourth over resulted in 10 runs for the loss of Malcolm’s wicket and Park faced the difficult feat of scoring 19 off the last over. The bowling of Davies proved too much for Thomason and Luke. Only one run came off the bat and there were four leg-byes and one wide. In the semi-finals, Old Collegians just failed to reach Lancaster Park’s total,

but Bumside-West beat Sydenham decisively. Results: First round: East-Shirley 40/5 lost to St Albans 41/1; Sydenham 89/2 beat Shirley Boys’ High School 62/3; Supporters’ Club 57/3 beat Sydenham Colts 50/5; Linwood High School 45 beat Xavier College 34; High School Old Boys 55/3 lost to Old Collegians 57/2; Riccarton 54/1 lost to Lancaster Park 55/3; Bumside-West University 79/2 beat Christchurch Boys’ High School 42/2; Marist beat St Andrew’s by default. Second round: Linwood High School 34/2 lost to Old Collegians 37/0; St Albans 64/3 lost to Sydenham 65/1; Burnside-West 90/1 beat Marist 58/4; Lancaster Park 54/2 beat Supporters’ Club 52. Semi-finals: Burnside-West 62/3 beat Sydenham 44/4; Lancaster Park 57 beat Old Collegians 54/2. Final: Burnside-West 61/1 (P. E. Wallace 22 not out, J. W. Davies 10, J. Smith 21 not out, extras 8) beat Lancaster Park 49/2 (S. Cameron 3, L Malcolm 19, B. Thomason 16 not out, T. E Luke 2 not out, extras 9).
