Gale alert given for west Fiji
NZPA Suva Western areas of Fiji were warned yesterday to be on the alert for gales today from Cyclone Steve. The previous night the cyclone passed west of the island of Rotuma, in the north of the group. Rotuma was reported yesterday to have escaped serious damage and a storm warning was reduced to a gale warning. The Nandi Meteorological Office said that Steve, a small tropical cyclone, was 560 km north-west of Nandi. The cyclone, with winds of 50 to 60 knots near its centre, appeared to be moving south, and if it continued on its present course western areas of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, could expect gales today.
