Invitation to girls for cadets
PA Wellington Schoolgirls are now able to take part in military cadet activities. Wing Commander R. B. Parker, commandant of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, says that the Ministry of Defence has removed all sexual discrimination, in line with other sectors of the community. “The aims of cadet training apply equally to young women and young men,” he said. “The girls will be able to take part in cadet activities on exactly the same basis as the boys.”
However, girls who want to join the school cadet corps, the Air Training Corps, or the Sea Cadet Corps could have difficulty finding a unit to join. There are only about 19 secondary schools in New Zealand still with cadet corps, and only a few are co-educational. The Education Department sent out circulars to schools last month to tell them about the new policy, but so far has not heard of any girls who wish to join the cadets.
