Maurice Ryan (left) and Warren Lees (above) will be in direct opposition as the respective captains, wicket-keep-ers and middie-order batsmen when Canterbury plays Otago in the second round of the Gillette Cup k n o c k-out cricket tournament at Lancaster Park today. When the sides met in the corresponding competition a season ago, Ryan played a significant part in Canterbury’s win. After an early collapse, Ryan (45) and Bevan Congdon (53 not out) joined in a partnership of 96 runs which all but saw Canterbury through to its five-wicket victory.
On that occasion. Ryan led Canterbury from the field, with Kevin Collins behind the stumps. Lees was also seen in an unfamiliar role: with Canterbury certain of having the result in safe-keeping, Lees took a rare turn at the bowling crease and conceded the winning run from his first delivery. Otago might be giving away home ground advantage today, but it. at least has a match behind it this summer. Otago eliminated Central Districts to two wickets in an exciting finish at Blenheim last week-end. The winner today qualifies for the final.
