Aust. Minister resigns
NZPA Sydney The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) has accepted the resignation of the Treasurer, Mr Phillip Lynch. Earlier yesterday there had been speculation that Mr Lynch was about to resign over a pre-election row about his involvement in land deals in Sydney. The reports followed denials by Mr Lynch and his advisers that any improprieties were involved ih land deals by companies associated with him and his family. The “Sydney Morning Herald” said yesterday that the resignation would be the most dramatic political event since the election of the Fraser Government in 1975, coming only three weeks before the General Election. Mr Lynch, who is recovering in hospital after a kidney-stone operation, would nevertheless contest his Melbourne metropolitan seat of Flinders in the election, said the “Herald.”
