Northern motorway
Sir, — I note that the Mayor, Mr Hay, said, when opening the new roundabout shopping arcade in Papanui, that the question of whether to provide a motorway to alleviate the traffic problems on Papanui Road would have to be faced shortly by the City Council. I fail to understand how a motorway or an expressway north of Cranford Street will help people living in Papanui or people travelling north. The majority of people driving in or out of town would use Cranford Street or Marshlands Road in peak hours as these are not crowded. I would suggest that those who use Papanui Road live in Papanui or Bishopdale mainly
and would not use a motorway through St Albans to get to and from work. Public money would be better spent on repairing existing roads rather than on splitting up communities. — Yours, etc., B. J. WILKINS. November 17, 1977.
