Oil conservation

Sir, — Yesterday’s report from “Live Lines” indicates

that the Electrical Supply Authorities Association forbearance of past criticism is at an end. They may be still understating their case, for the 1975 figures, in terms of dollars, indicated that electricity and gas used only 4 per cent, whilst private motor-cars used 25 per cent of oil imports. Also Marsden Power Station takes residual heavy fuel direct from the refinery, but this sludge would require very expensive equipment for converting it to gasolene, so that having a large consumer close-by must be convenient for the refining company. One assumes that the heavy oil residue sold to the power station would be priced at what the sludge would fetch if it were reexported, less an allowance for transport and extra handling. — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY* November 18, 1977.
