Italy's art treasures

Sir. — Recently, “The Press” ran three articles that dealt with the problems of deterioration and restoration of irreplaceable art works in Italy. These were the Leonardo mural in Florence under the Vasari, the Byzarn tine mosaics in Ravenna, the bronze horses, etc., in Venice. The response from your readers appears to be non-response. In all of Europe, Italy alone bears visible witness to the heights of civilised artistic creation from the ancient Greeks to the present. This historic wealth is continually being stolen, depredated by tourists and eaten away by industrial pollution. The Italian nation cannot afford to maintain or protect this treasure. I recommend that Italy hold a referendum to determine the establishment of the country as an international museum of art and architecture under police protection and financial support of the United Nations. The world owes this to itself. — Yours, etc., S. WESTERMANN. November 12. 1977.
