Girls join A.T.C.

Greymouth reporter

The No. 36. squadron of the Air Training corps at Greymouth is the first to allow girls into its ranks. The pilot and training officer (Mr E. Lord) said the idea originated last year when a few girls went to a parade and asked why they could not join.

“We decided to give it a trial run at the beginning of this year, and it worked well.” he said. Seven girls are on the squadron’s roll of 28.

Mr Lord said that when other squadrons around New Zealand heard Greymouth was allowing girls to join, they wrote to headquarters at Wellington asking that the situation be clarified.

“Following these inquiries, headquarters issued a letter saying that it was up to the individual squadrons if they took girls or not.” Girls receive the same training as boys, although they cannot yet take part in the squadron’s annual visit to an air force base.
