Apartheid boycott sought
NZPA-Reuter New York A United Nations committee looking into racial discrimination in sport has recommended a boycott of any country practising apartheid. The recommendation, in a draft declaration unanimously adopted by the eight-nation committee, was specifically directed at South Africa. Drawn up on the initiative
of Jamica it also urged that any country practising a policy of racial segregation be expelled from international and regional sports bodies. The draft must go to the General Assembly for final approval. It comes six days after the Security Council imposed an unprecedented arms embargo on South Africa.
The committee advocated that action be taken against
sports teams or individuals ignoring the proposed boycott, and suggests that offenders should be refused any kind of assistance, banned from national sports facilities, and denied national awards and honours. The committee further urged that national Olympic committees should actively encourage all affiliated bodies to end competition with South Africa.
