Water Safetv aim -to save lives

The objectives of the New Zealand Water Safety Council’s campaign for 1977-78 are: • Without detracting from public enjoyment of water sports or recreation, to dispel apathy and stimulate over-all awareness of the possible consequences of carelessness or irresponsibility in or near water, through all age groups. • To achieve a progressive change in public attitudes towards water sports and the need for sensible precautions and preparedness. • To achieve a meaningful reduction in the number of drownings and acquatic accidents. • Complementary to these main objectives, this

year we are placing the accent on four secondary objectives, which are: • To reduce the growing numbers of small boat fatalities and accidents, through an educational effort to be mounted in association with the Small Boat Safety Committee. • To assist the Underwater Association in its educational and training programme and thereby help prevent fatalities or accidents amongst the rapidly expanding diving fraternity. • To stress parent responsibility as the major preventive factor for the water safety of small children. • To stress the need for adequate protection and supervision of home swimming pools.
