Tinner out of tour?

NZPA London The New Zealand test batsman Glenn Turner, who has relinquished his country’s captaincy for the home test series against England in February and March, may also be out of the New Zealand side touring England next summer. Turner, aged 30, who has played in 32 tests, said at his home near Worcester that he was not telling the New Zealand Cricket Council to “get lost”—it was just a temporary measure so that he could organise his Worcestershire benefit in 1978. For this reason he felt his presence was vital with the county next summer.

“This is not in any way intended as a snub to New Zealand,” he said, adding, “whichever way I move, somebody is going to say I am doing the wrong thing. “It may appear like putting self before country and I am afraid I have got to accept some form of criticism. I have thought about it a lot.” Turner said he would welcome the opportunity to play in the three five day tests against England next summer but he did not feel he could be away from Worcestershire for three months for the whole tour of 19 matches. He hoped New Zealand would be able to accept this arrangement, though he realised it w'ould be something new'.
