Otago, Auck. win knock-out cricket

PA Blenheim A tense finish, with the result decided only in the last over of the game, saw Otago beat Central Districts in their first-round Gillette Cup cricekt match at Horton Park, Blenheim, on Saturday. In reply to Central District’s 143, Otago was slow to build its innings, making the outcome uncertain until the winning runs were scored with just two balls to spare.

The final five minutes provided concentrated excitement as wickets fell, and then B. Blair hit a six for Otago, and the advantage swung first to one team and then to the other.

At Auckland a rollicking innings of 126 runs in just 103 minutes by its captain, Graham Vivian, enabled Auckland to coast past Wellington at Eden Park and into the second round of the knock-out championship. Vivian’s innings came at a time when Auckland, at 58 for three, was merely holding its own without really threatening to take the Wel-

lington attack apart and increase the scoring tempo. The loss of Mark Burgess at 71, did not help Auckland’s chances but it did signal the start of a grand partnership between Vivian and John Reid.
