Signal a mystery
The pilot of a Qantas flight from Australia to Christchurch picked up the signal of an emergency locator transmitter about 160 km west of Hokitika about noon yesterday. The transmitters work on an international emergency frequency and are placed aboard aircraft and ships. The Marine Department was notified but no ships or aircraft are known to.be missing. A Civil Aviation Division spokesman said the emergency signal might have been a “breakthrough” from another frequency or someone testing an emergency transmitter. The signal has not been heard again. All international air traffic has been asked to listen for further signals.
