KYTHERA DEAD

PA Hawera The New Zealand racing and breeding industry suffered a great loss on Thursday night when the seven-year-old mare, Kythera, died at Massey University. Kythera, owned by Mr J. D. Bonner, of Hurleyville, and trained during her career by W. McEwan and C. Gestro at Hawera, broke a leg at the stud on Wednesday. She was taken to Massey University and was operated on for six hours, but she failed to respond and died.

Kythera, one of the most outstanding staying mares in recent years, won $55,000 in stakes.

A mare by Hermes from Princess Meade, she was bought by the Bonner family as a yearling at Trentham in 1971.' Among her successes were wins in the Summer Handicap at Trentham in track record time, two successive wins in the President’s Handicap at Trentham and other successes at Wanganui.

Last year she was campaigned in Australia and ran a gallant third in the Melbourne Cup. Kythera was retired to the stud after winning her second President’s Handicap at Trentham last March. Mr Bonner said yesterday that the mare would be brought home to be buried on the farm.
