Big drop in trade with Chile
PA Wellington New Zealand’s exports to Chile fell from $17.7M in 1973-74 to $33,000 in 1976-77, the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys) told Parliament.
Imports from Chile fell from $420,000 dollars m 1973-74 to $134,000 in 197377.
Answering a question by Mr W. F. Birch (Nat., Franklin), Mr Taiboys said it was impossible to say how much New Zealand had lost in export earnings because of the trade-union ban on trade with Chile, as many potential exporters had turned to other markets and Chilean importers had turned to other suppliers. Mr Taiboys said the unions’ ban on trade was being enforced in Near Zealand and Australia but he was not aware of its being enforced in other counties ■ r he ban was imposed after the overthrow of the late President Allende's Marxist Government by the present military regime.
