No response from Japanese

NZPA Tokyo The Japanese Government, in the two weeks since the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys) left Tokyo, has made no response to his interim package of proposals designed to break the tradenegotiating deadlock between Japan and New Zealand.

Two meetings have taken place between New Zealand and Japanese officials since Mr Taiboys left Tokyo, according to reliable sources, but there has been no sign of a willingness on Tokyo’s part to accept the package as a negotiating base. The situation, the sources said, remained one of New

Zealand’s simply awaiting a move from the Fukuda Government. No further developments were likely until a detailed response from it was received.

Meanwhile, New Zealand meat exporters have done marginally better in acceptance by Japan’s beef import agency of tenders submitted for a fresh overseas order of beef. Official sources said yesterday that the Livestock Industry Promotion Council of Japan had called tenders for the supply of 5350 tonnes of beef from either Australia or New Zealand, or both.

The letting of the supply tenders, revealed on Thursday, disclosed that Australian exporters had won 88 per cent of the order.
