University Vacancies THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED for appointment to the following: RESEARCH SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW/ RESEARCH FELLOW (2 POSTS) TWO Senior Research Fellowships/Research Fellowships, both available immediately, are offered. , The Department carries out work in nuclear structure physics and has an academic staff of 17 headed by Professor J. O. Newton. At present the principal fields of study are heavy ion induced Coulomb excitation and transfer reactions, and gamma rays following heavy ion.xn reactions. The major accelerator is the I4UD pelletron tandem (14 MV temunai). An Enge split-pole spectrometer, equipped witn focal plane detector, is available. Closing date, November 30, 1977* FACULTY OF SCIENCE SECOND CHAIR OF FORESTRY A second Chair is to be established in the Department of Forestry. The Department has national responsibilities as the major central school of forestry education at tertiary level m Australia. It has extensive contacts through education, research and development aid with many countries, particularly in Asia. This Chair was previously advertised in 1976, but curtailment of University finances prevented further consideration of applications at that time. Funds are now available to proceed to a continuing appointment. Previous applicants are therefore invited to contact the Academic Registrar in order to confirm their continued interest. The interests of the person appointed should complement those of the Head of Department, Professor D. M. Griffin, whose principal interests are in forest pathology and microbial ecology. Professor Griffin was appointed as Head of Department in 1975 for five vears with eligibility for re-appointment as Head. The appointee to the Second Chair will be expected to accept appointment as Head of Department, if so invited, at some time in the future. The electoral committee will be particularly interested to receive applications from persons with experience in forestry' practice and forest use and a special research interest in some aspect of these areas. It will wish to appoint a person with wide knowledge and a broad vision of the future of forestry in Australia. Salary on appointment to the other posts will be in accordance with qualifications and experience within the ranges: Senior Research Fellow. $20,489-$24,464 p.a.; Research Fellow, $14,632-$19,139 p.a. OTHER CONDITIONS: Appointment, as Professor is to retiring age 65 vears; Senior Research Fellow or Research Fellow normally for three years in the first instance with the possibility of extension to five years. Reasonable travel expenses are paid and assistance with housing is provided for an appointee from outside Canberra. Superannuation benefits are available.
