Riccarton I, the only decisive; winner in the first round of the* summer A grade table tennis; competition, served further! notice that it would be hard to! beat when it toppled Avonside |

111 in the second round of th competition on Wednesda evening. Avonside 111 had narrowbeaten the second Riccarto team in the first round, but th top Riccarton team, led bv U. nationally-ranked juniors, Armstrong and Michael Hame made good its revenge and the' both won all their singles i their team’s 9-3 victory. Armstrong narrowly’ beat tin top-ranked New Zealand woman Jan Morris, on advantage point, in the deciding game, and Hame dropped the first game against John Yang, but the talented Riccarton player made no mistake in the next two games. Crawford Liddell, in his last appearance in Christchurch for some time, helped Linwood to victory. 8-4. against Avonside 1. Liddell, a doughty defender, was too consistent for the youthful pair of Martin Kelly and Steven Dixon, and he edged out the experienced Barr\ Radford in three games. Linwood, with the services of the former national representative, Ling Nan Ming, was not embarrassed although it lost two doubles. Ling, as expected, made short work of his three openents in singles. Peter Whittaker chiselled his way to victory against Lawrence Crawford in the final singles between Dallington and Riccarton 11. but Whittaker’s win was the vital one. in Dallington’s victory, on a count-back against Riccarton. With Whittaker and Dennis Kalin winning two singles each combing to win the vital doubles. Dallington achieved its close win in spite of the presence of the nationally-ranked Wayne Adam son. who won all his singles for Riccarton. Avonside 11 accounted comfortably for Riccarton HI in the other contest. Colin Tipper had a notable success against Bert Thompson, but that was Riccarton’s only singles success.
