Many mixed marriages

NZPA London Two-thirds of all marriages in Roman Catholic churches in England and Wales are mixed marriages between Catholics and nonCatholics, according to Church figures. One consequence of this has been a revised set of rules, under which Roman Catholic bishops have said they will no longer insist that people who marry Roman Catholics must make a binding promise to bring up their children as Catholics. The new rules, worked out after a meeting with Anglican bishops, say Catholics should still strive to ensure that children of such mixed marriages are raised in the Catholic faith, but not at the expense of their marriage. The new rules also allow priests and deans to approve marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics. Previouslv approval had to come from a bishop.
